The first winegrowers in our family settled in Eguisheim. At the time, they had multiple occupations, working both the vineyards and the fields.
Joseph Freudenreich, a winegrower and also a foreman in the potash mines, was already bottling part of his wines — a rare practice at the time. The bottles were mainly intended for miners and railway workers.
It was his son, also named Joseph, who focused on viticulture and winemaking. He took over the family estate after the Second World War.
In 1951, he married Henriette — an unusual couple for the time, as Henriette worked in the vineyard while her husband preferred to focus on winemaking and sales!
The acquisition of a former tithe courtyard dating back to 1051 (adjacent to the family home) is now the estate’s welcoming place for all wine enthusiasts.
Their son Marc married Danielle (Wine Queen of 1986), also the daughter of a winegrower in Saint-Hippolyte. From then on, cultivating additional vineyards there made it possible to add the famous Pinot Noir “Rouge de Saint-Hippolyte” to our wine list.
Marc and Danielle took over the running of the estate together.
The passion for wine continues to be passed down from generation to generation — in 2015, Amélie joined the estate after completing her studies in oenology.
The estate has also diversified by renovating the family home to create guest rooms.
